we walked in the dark to the football field
raised our eyes to the sky
she’d never seen a shooting star
i don’t know what we spoke of
but it was pleasant just to have her near me
when we touched she touched me back
we broke the rules and climbed the ladder
concession stand conquered
and laid down
side by side
and watched the stars
and while we spoke
a burst of brilliance broke across the sky
and shared its light with our hearts
she saw her star
and i found mine.
